BioWare details gameplay improvements coming to Mass Effect: Legendary Edition remasters

We've known for a while now that BioWare is working on some fairly major gameplay tweaks for the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition remastered trilogy. In particular, Mass Effect 1 needs some gameplay changes, as a lot changed during the jump to Mass Effect 2. Fortunately, BioWare is finally starting to detail some of the improvements we can expect gameplay-wise.

In a new blog post this week, BioWare revealed combat changes coming to Mass Effect, additional gameplay improvements for all three games in the trilogy, improvements to The Mako and in-game driving sections and rebalancing Mass Effect 3's Galaxy At War system to suit the new single-player only approach.

In Mass Effect 1, shooting and weapon accuracy has been completely retuned, melee attacks are now mapped to a button press, more enemies will be susceptible to headshot damage, all weapons can be used by any class without penalty and inventory management has been improved. When your out in the more open sections of Mass Effect 1, the Mako will be much nicer to drive and control, with improved camera controls and less sliding around – shields also recharge faster and touching lava no longer results in an instant mission failure.

While Mass Effect 1 needed the most tweaking, that doesn't mean we won't be seeing gameplay improvements in Mass Effect 2 or 3. The whole trilogy will benefit from squad command improvements, fairer boss fights, a better cover system and rebalanced ammo drops. When all is said and done, the entire trilogy should feel more modern and unified in gameplay.

That brings us to Mass Effect 3's Galaxy At War system. There is no multiplayer mode in the remaster, which was previously necessary to 100% the galactic readiness meter before going to war with the reapers. The system has been rebalanced for single-player only, with the more content you complete across the entire trilogy impacting your ‘galactic readiness' in the final game. Also, the Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut DLC is the default ending for Mass Effect 3.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is launching on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on the 14th of May.
