Blizzard says Diablo 4 will still get new content, even after Diablo 5 releases

Blizzard may be moving ahead with Diablo V, but Diablo IV is far from finished. In a new interview, Diablo V director Brent Gibson confirmed that Diablo IV will continue to receive seasons and new content for years to come, including after Diablo V launches.

Icy Veins spoke with Gibson about the future of the franchise, addressing concerns from players who worried that Diablo IV would be placed on “life support” now that Diablo V is in development. Gibson pushed back on that idea, saying “We have a lot coming” for Diablo IV and that the team will continue supporting the game as long as players keep showing up.

Gibson addressed seasonal support directly, saying “We are planning on supporting seasons as long as the community continues to show up for D4, similar to what we have in D2 and D3.” He also emphasised that Diablo IV is not being treated as a stepping stone to Diablo V, adding “The train isn’t stopping… If you’re worried, don’t sweat it. Because we’re going to be making content for a long time.”

He explained that Diablo V takes place 100 years after the events of Diablo IV, giving the team a large narrative window to continue telling stories within Diablo IV without conflicting with the sequel’s direction. Gibson also noted that the team is spending more time on seasonal content, with build novelty, quality-of-life improvements and new features continuing to evolve.

Blizzard’s approach mirrors what the studio has done with Diablo II and Diablo III, both of which still receive seasonal updates decades after launch. As long as Diablo IV’s player base remains active, Blizzard intends to keep producing new seasons and updates, even once Diablo V arrives.

KitGuru says: The Diablo 5 announcement came as quite a shock, as it felt like Blizzard only just began getting Diablo 4 right with its latest expansion this summer. Still, considering how well supported Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 have been, I see no reason to doubt that Diablo 4 will get similar treatment.
