Back when Fable was pushed out of 2026 I noted concerns about the game’s ability to meet expectations after a prolonged nine-year development cycle. As it turns out the game is reportedly well over budget at this stage, adding to the financial pressure facing the game.
According to a new report from Windows Central, Fable has gone “uncomfortably” over budget. The report also highlights a major strategic setback for Microsoft’s multiplatform push, as Sony has positioned God of War Laufey to launch just days before Fable on PS5. With Fable arriving on Sony’s platform for the first time there is now a real risk that many players will simply choose the new God of War instead, limiting the upside of bringing Fable to rival platforms.
Development on Fable began in 2018 and the project went through multiple internal reboots before settling on its current vision. By the time it releases the game will have been in development for around nine years which almost guarantees higher than normal costs. In an earlier article covering the game’s most recent delay, I wrote that due to the number of delays and prolonged development cycle, not only are player expectations going to be higher but there is going to be a higher revenue bar to clear in order to be profitable. Based on the new information that Fable is well over budget, those concerns now appear to be warranted.
While there may be concerns for Fable financially, I do not have concerns about the game's quality. The recent 30-minute gameplay demo released earlier this Summer has me pretty convinced that we are going to be getting a great game here. We'll just have to wait and see if it resonates with enough people to become a wide sales hit.
KitGuru Says: I think Fable is going to be great, but I do worry about its ability to reach sales targets given how long it has taken to make, alongside Microsoft's fondness of cutting costs. The good news is that Playground Games shouldn't have nearly as much trouble making a second RPG after building up expertise in the genre from scratch.
