Respawn still considers crossplay important for Apex Legends

Back when Apex Legends first launched in 2019, there was talk of whether the game would get cross-play functionality similar to other notable multiplayer titles. The feature has yet to be confirmed so far, but Respawn still considers it an important addition to its battle royale.

Speaking with Game Informer Magazine (via PCGamer), Respawn’s General Manager mentioned that crossplay is “something that is kind of expected in the industry and is important for a game like ours”. In a more personal anecdote, he discusses how he would like to party up in Apex Legends  at home with colleagues but due to people playing on different systems, that’s not always possible.

At this point, live service games are almost expected to support cross-platform multiplayer or cross-platform progression in some form. As we heard towards the next generation consoles, it is also expected that current titles like Apex Legends will run on those systems with multiplayer between those on newer or older hardware.

At this point, huge games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare do support crossplay, which is swiftly becoming the new standard for multiplayer on consoles.

KitGuru Says: Apex Legends would certainly benefit from crossplay, but like most shooters, it should come with filters based on input. You may not want to be the only one with a controller  in a lobby full of keyboard and mouse users, so including options is important too.
