Rumour points to L.A. Noire sequel but the evidence doesn’t add up

A rumour has begun circulating online claiming Rockstar’s next game after GTA 6 will be a sequel to L.A. Noire, this time set in San Francisco and centred around detectives hunting the Zodiac killer. The claim comes from an old GTAForums post that recently resurfaced on Reddit, but there are several reasons to be doubtful.

A Reddit user highlighted an old leak thread in which a GTAForums poster correctly predicted a handful of GTA 6 details. In that same thread, the poster also claimed Rockstar’s next project would be an L.A. Noire follow‑up set in San Francisco. The rumour has since gone semi‑viral, attracting hundreds of comments on Reddit.

However, there are multiple reasons to treat this claim with caution. L.A. Noire, while fondly remembered, was not the major success Rockstar hoped for, and the studio behind it was ultimately shut down. A sequel would require a new team, a new direction and, given the proposed San Francisco setting, likely a new title entirely, one that wouldn’t immediately read as a continuation of L.A. Noire.

It’s also worth noting that L.A. Noire centred on fictionalised crimes, whereas this rumour claims Rockstar would tackle the very real and still officially unsolved Zodiac killer case. That alone would create major narrative and ethical challenges. Any attempt to depict or “solve” the case would draw criticism for rewriting or gamifying an unresolved tragedy.

Rockstar has shown some interest in revisiting older IP recently, such as contracting Remedy to remake Max Payne 1 and 2, but a full sequel to L.A. Noire remains an unlikely move.

KitGuru Says: The resurfaced rumour is interesting from a historical curiosity standpoint, but the leap from “correct GTA 6 details” to “Rockstar is making an L.A. Noire sequel about the Zodiac killer” is a big one – and not supported by any credible reporting.
