Discord seems to be developing a new Game Mode for its desktop client to reduce CPU and GPU consumption while a game is running. According to a report, the app will automatically detect when a game is active and temporarily disable visual effects and animations to free up system resources.
The feature was spotted by Discord Previews (via VideoCardz). It automates settings users currently toggle manually, such as Reduced Motion, by cutting back on client‑side rendering during gameplay. The aim is to leave more headroom for the game itself without requiring users to adjust Discord’s performance options each time.
The addition follows a year of optimisation work on Discord’s desktop client. In late 2025, the company addressed several memory‑related issues, reducing p95 memory usage and experimenting with safeguards to prevent the app from exceeding 4GB of RAM. More recently, Discord updated its Windows client to Electron 42, reporting a roughly 17% drop in median CPU usage, alongside further rendering tweaks that shaved off an additional few percent.
KitGuru says: Discord is almost always running alongside games, so automating resource‑saving behaviour makes sense. A dedicated Game Mode could help reduce background overhead for users who keep the client open during long sessions.
