Sony will stop making any physical PlayStation games in 2028

Sony has announced that it will discontinue physical disc production for all new PlayStation games starting January 2028. After that date, new releases will be available exclusively in digital format, either through the PlayStation Store or via digital codes sold at retailers.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony says the decision reflects shifting consumer behaviour and the broader entertainment industry’s move away from physical media. The company claims this transition “has no impact” on games already released on disc, but confirms that all future titles will be digital‑only.

PlayStation Series

This announcement arrives just days after Take‑Two confirmed that GTA 6 will launch without a physical disc. However, Sony’s timing has raised concerns among preservation‑focused players, particularly given the company’s recent decisions around older platforms.

Sony is currently preparing to shut down the PS3 and PS Vita digital stores, meaning players on those systems will no longer be able to purchase new content. In its announcement, Sony said that “new content purchases will no longer be possible once the PlayStation Store closes on these devices,” adding that previously purchased content will remain downloadable “for the foreseeable future”, which isn't exactly a firm commitment to longevity.

KitGuru Says: I don't think that all games need a physical release, but Sony's shift to digital-only is particularly worrying because of the company's track-record.
