Splitgate sequel confirmed with new trailer and release date

Splitgate reached V1.0 in 2022 after an extensive period of early access development, followed by a year-long open beta. Now, the developers at 1047 Games have announced plans for a sequel.

While Splitgate did garner a lot of praise at one stage, its popularity began to fizzle out pretty quickly after the launch of the beta version, dropping from tens of thousands of concurrent players on Steam to just a few hundred at peak times. Still, there is a foundation here for a solid multiplayer shooter, and 1047 Games intends to continue building on it with a sequel.

The cinematic trailer for Splitgate 2 has now dropped, revealing plans to launch in 2025 for PC (via Steam and Epic Games), PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. The game will even ship on last-gen Xbox One and PS4 consoles too in an effort to be accessible to as many players as possible.

Splitgate initially caught on thanks to viral clips of the game and its Portal mechanics, similar to those from the Valve game of the same name. Due to the game's dip in popularity, updates ceased when the beta ended in September 2022. With the sequel, 1047 Games has a clean slate to try and recapture the audience and hopefully this time, retain that audience.

KitGuru Says: Splitgate had a very sudden drop off, to the point where I am surprised that a sequel is being made at all. In a market already saturated with team-based multiplayer shooters, it will be interesting to see if Splitgate 2 can cut through the noise and really find an audience.
