Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 2 rumoured to be in the works

Call of Duty studios typically operate on a three-year development cycle, with each new entry rotating between Treyarch, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games. Following the critical reception of 2021’s Call of Duty: Vanguard, Sledgehammer Games are reportedly dropping the WWII setting in favour of returning to Advanced Warfare.

Ahead of the upcoming launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Vanguard remains the most recent entry in the FPS franchise. Developed by Sledgehammer Games, the WWII shooter launched late last year to a middling reception across the board, with players seemingly once again bored of shooters set during the World Wars.

According to WhatIfGaming, while the team at Sledgehammer Games originally planned to develop multiple sequels to Vanguard, its poor reception has now led them to reach further back into their repertoire, instead working on a sequel to 2014’s Call of Duty Advanced Warfare.

Unsurprisingly, the game will reportedly utilise the IW 9.0 engine (the same engine powering COD MWII), meaning that Advanced Warfare 2 should offer some major upgrades over the first game when it releases in 2025.

Of course, all this should be taken with a pinch of salt. That being said, Advanced Warfare was one of the most fun COD games in recent memory, and so returning to the jetpack future of Advanced Warfare will be welcome – at least by some fans.
