Forspoken launches in Spring 2022

Forspoken was one of the first games announced for PS5. Revealed back the during the 2020 PS5 showcase, the game looks to be blending the old and the new, sending New York City resident Frey Holland into the fantastical world of Athia. Showcasing the best look at the game yet, Forspoken was revealed to be launching in Spring 2022.

Forspoken is the first game from studio Luminous Productions, formed from developers who worked on Final Fantasy XV. Running on the brand new Luminous Engine, Forspoken looks to offer a big open world with fast and fluid traversal and combat.

Speaking on the game, the Creative Producer of Luminous Productions, Raio Mitsuno, said “Frey is a directionless, gritty yet street smart young woman who has persevered despite her rough upbringing in New York City. And her life hasn’t really gotten any easier now that she’s about to turn 21. Things take a turn for the unexpected when she’s magically transported to Athia, a land where fantasies and nightmares are suddenly very real.”

They continued, discussing Forspoken’s gameplay, saying “Playing as Frey, you’ll need to harness newly discovered magical abilities to battle the terrifying monsters that inhabit the land. To have a chance of returning home, she’ll also have to contend with the Tantas — destructive and twisted all-powerful matriarchs who have dominion over Athia.”

The game’s soundtrack will be scored by none other than 2018’s God of War’s Bear McCreary as well as BioShock’s Garry Schyman. Furthermore, the game’s writers include Gary Whitta of Rogue One fame, as well as Amy Hennig, known best for her work on Uncharted.

Square Enix has chosen to take an interesting route with Forspoken, blending both fantasy and modern genres into one. While initially somewhat jarrging, bringing a modern character into a fantasy world is uncommon in the video game space, and so will allow for many interesting situations. Furthermore, the gameplay itself looks to be incredibly fun, fast paced and fluid. Hopefully Forspoken ends up being as big as Square Enix is banking on.
