Mortal Kombat 1 hits new milestone with 8 million copies sold

Contrary to its prior release schedule, NetherRealm went straight from Mortal Kombat 11 to MK1 – skipping their previous cadence of breaking up Mortal Kombat releases with a new Injustice game. While the results of this shift in strategy may not have quite gone to plan, the latest entry in the fighting game franchise has still managed to shift an impressive number of units; officially selling over 8 million copies.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the official Mortal Kombat page revealed its latest milestone, writing: “8 million units sold and kounting! Thank you to the Mortal Kombat Kommunity for your support!”

8 million copies is of course impressive. That said, the latest title is still far behind that of its predecessor, with MK11 managing to sell 15 million copies in its first 3 years on the market.

While MK1 isn’t quite at its 3rd anniversary, it is unlikely that the title will be able to double its total sales by September of this year.

It is worth noting that Mortal Kombat 11 is the best-selling entry in the series, and so it perhaps makes sense that a direct sequel has been unable to match its heights.

Regardless, at its current pace, MK1 will likely manage to hit the 10 million mark by its 3rd anniversary. We will have to wait and see.
