NieR: Automata creator working on another title for Square Enix

Yoko Taro was pushed into the limelight following the surprising critical and commercial success of 2017’s NieR: Automata. The creator has worked in the industry for 25 years, and appears to have no intention of stopping any time soon, announcing that he is working on a brand new title with Square Enix.

During a recent livestream to promote the soon-to-be-released NieR: Replicant remaster, (as translated by Gematsu) producer Yosuke Saito revealed that Yoko Taro, who Directed the original NieR as well as Automata, is currently working on a new game with Square Enix, taking the role of creative director. This new game will reportedly be a smaller digital-only title – though it may get a limited physical release.

Very few details on the game itself have been revealed, though Yoko Taro himself claimed that the game is “difficult to explain” and “a somewhat unusual game, I’ve created something mysterious that I have no idea how to explain or sell” – which is onbrand for Yoko Taro.

Saito added that it is an “off-beat game” that feels both “nostalgic and new”. Unlike Yoko Taro, Saito does believe that the game will “definitely sell well!” Fans have been waiting for Yoko Taro’s next console game ever since the explosive success of NieR: Automata. It will be interesting to see what the eccentric creator has planned.
