Sonic Frontiers Director claims “we still have a long way to go”

After 5 long years of waiting, we have finally gotten another mainline Sonic game – and early responses from fans seem to be highly positive. In the wake of its launch and positive reception, Sonic Frontiers’ director has finally spoken, claiming “we still have a long way to go.”

Sonic Frontiers launched on the 8th of November to mixed reviews from critics but high praise from fans – with the game as a result becoming by far the most-played title in the franchise – at least in terms of concurrent player counts on Steam.

In the wake of all this, Sonic Frontiers’ game director – Morio Kishimoto – took to Twitter to talk to fans, saying (as translated by Twitter): “I'm sorry I couldn't contact you because I've been busy since the release date. I'm relieved that the release date has arrived and that it seems to have reached everyone safely. We are checking the opinions of the critics and everyone. As you pointed out, we still have a long way to go, and we take this seriously as a global playtest.”

What Kishimoto is referring to here is a previous statement made by the director, where he claimed that not only is Sonic Frontiers the 1st entry in a new 3rd generation of Sonic games (after 2D and 3D Sonic), but also that Sonic Team hopes to eventually find themselves back near the top of the game development world – as they once were in the 1990s.

All this is to say that Kishimoto’s statement is not necessarily talking about Sonic Frontiers itself, but the future of the franchise as a whole; and if Sonic Frontiers is being used as a template with which to improve upon for future games, then the Blue Blur may indeed be having a renaissance.
