Sony releases first Gran Turismo film trailer

Last year it was announced that a film adaptation based on Sony’s long-running and ever popular Gran Turismo racing series was in development. Said to be inspired by a true story, the first official trailer for the film has now been released – alongside the film’s August release date.

Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, “a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver,” the GT film is being directed by Neill Blomkamp of District 9, Chappie and Elysium fame – an interesting choice indeed.

We have seen many films and shows released at this point based on video games. That said, the fact that the GT film tells the story of a Gran Turismo video game player who ultimately ends up becoming a real-life racer does have a lot of potential for unique story-telling moments, especially as the film is actually based on a true story (unlike pretty much every other video game-based adaptation).

The Gran Turismo film launches exclusively in cinemas this August and stars David Harbour; Orlando Bloom; Archie Madekwe; Darren Barnet; Geri Halliwell Horner and Djimon Hounsou.
