Just like 2025 before it, this year has been filled with countless lay-offs across the entire games industry, ranging from AAA studios to indies and all those in between. Following a redundancy consultation process held back in August, Supermassive Games (of Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology fame) is said to have now laid-off over 70 developers across multiple departments.
As reported by the publication Insider-Gaming, Supermassive Games has now concluded its previously-announced consultation period, ultimately leading to “more than 70 members of staff across a number of departments” being laid off. Some of these roles are said to have included “developers, artists, producers, and members of the studio’s senior leadership team.”
Among the many team members to have been let go includes Frank Tindle – a 16 year veteran at the studio who confirmed that “more than 70 brilliant people are leaving Supermassive.”
Known best for their work on the original Until Dawn, as well as their Dark Pictures Anthology series, Supermassive Games have struggled somewhat in recent years, with their latest self-published release ‘Directive 8020’ amassing an all-time peak of just 3000 concurrent players on Steam while receiving overall mixed player reviews.
It is worth noting that at its peak, Supermassive Games comprised of 400+ developers; a surprisingly big team given its position in the industry. That said, since the release of Until Dawn back in 2015, the studio has put out at least one game every single year – on occasion producing as many as 3 projects of various scopes in a single 12 month period.
Regardless, it is unfortunate to see around a fifth of the entire studio having now been let go. Hopefully all those affected are able to move on to bigger and better things. Tindle’s full statement can be found HERE.
