Apple reveals iPhone 16 & iPhone 16 Pro with 3nm A18 SoC

At Apple's annual September event yesterday, the iPhone 16 was officially unveiled. Utilising a new A18 processor, using TSMC's 3nm process node, the new standard iPhones will now be capable of running AAA games available on iOS, like Resident Evil Village, Death's Stranding and No Man's Sky.

The A18 uses a 6-core CPU, with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, alongside a 5-core GPU that delivers 40% better performance than the GPU found in the A16. The new SoC also has a 16-core neural engine to accelerate AI tasks, like real-time language translation and enhanced photo processing. Finally, with the chip being 30% more efficient, users should be able to squeeze out a bit more battery life.

Naturally, there is also an iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, which comes with a camera upgrade, bigger display and a bigger battery. Unfortunately, the Pro-grade iPhones are also the only models in the line-up to have 120Hz displays, as has been the case since the iPhone 13. Perhaps next year Apple will finally bring smoother refresh rates to the wider userbase.
