Apple recall faulty Time Capsules

TUAW are reporting that Apple are recalling a plethora of their Time Capsule range from 2008 for repair or replacement. These apparently fail after 18 months of use.

The recall is detailed now on Apple's Knowledge base and it covers units with serial numbers in the range XX807XXXXXX – XX814XXXXXX – these were sold between February and June of 2008.

The issue appears to be that the device shuts down unexpectedly after 18 months use due to a serious internal fault, which hasn't been detailed as yet.

If you have machine with a serial number in this range then Apple suggest you get in touch with an Authorised Service Provider or an Apple Contact Centre to get a replacement or repair under warranty. You can also pop down to the Genius Bar for a consultation if you wish.

More seriously, if you have already lost important data due to a failure Apple have said that “an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) can transfer your data from the affected Time Capsule to a replacement Time Capsule.”

If you have already had this issue and have previously paid to get your unit repaired, Apple are offering refunds to affected customers.

Kitguru says: It seems Apple quality control isn't always as good as we hope. Discuss here
