Sony Ericsson used a TV commercial last night in the Super Bowl to offer a sneak peak at a new smartphone which is designed for playing video games. This device is called the Xperia Play and looks to be running the Android operating system.
Sony Ericsson have said on their Facebook page that it is going to officially unveil the new smartphone on February the 13th. The phone is expected to the be the first phone to meet the standards of Sony’s new Playstation Certified distinction, which is a set of guidelines laid out by Sony to allow Android handsets to play older Playstation games.
The dramatic commercial (seen above) says “the smartphone with everything you need and the one thing you want.”
Last week Sony said they are opening up their game software library to non Sony devices for the first time ever, via an application they are calling ‘Playstation Suite’.
This is a good way to highlight their gaming capabilities and will certainly sell more phones to the gaming audience. The Xperia Play is the first time that Sony Ericsson have worked closely with their Japanese parent company Playstation group on product development.
Other details such as pricing and release dates to the public have yet to be released.
KitGuru says: Will this be a big seller? we certainly think so.
