Windows Phone 8 hits RTM

Over the weekend it has been revealed that Microsoft's latest effort at a mobile operating system, Windows Phone 8 ‘Apollo', has reached the RTM stage. Contrary to previous rumours the RTM date was planned and the late October release of Windows Phone 8 is still on schedule.

Windows Phone 8 will allow partners to finally compete with Android and iOS in terms of hardware. Multi-core processors, HD displays and NFC connectivity are now all supported. While the software itself is developed on the NT kernel and put it on the same level as Android and iOS in terms of functionality – a place where the current Windows Phone 7 platform sometimes falls short.

From here, it is up to partners such as Nokia, Samsung, HTC and Huawei to adapt the software to their devices in time for the official Windows Phone 8 release rumoured for October 29.
