Qualcomm showcases new Mirasol displays

You wouldn't be mistaken if you hadn't heard of Mirasol displays before reading this article – we didn't know either. Mirasol displays are essentialy coloured e-ink displays with all the normal pros and cons of them – supreme power efficiency but poor colour reproduction. At SID Display Week, Qualcomm has demonstrated three prototype Mirasol displays – a change of pace from their usual mobile chipset offerings.

The first of which is a 1.5 inch display and we're sure you can guess what its ideal usage scenario would be – a smart watch. A Qualcomm representative told The Verge that you could “almost” use it purely as a watch and not have to worry about battery life.

There was also a 4.3 inch model on show with an impressive 1280 x 720 resolution and it's ideal partnering hardware would obviously be a smartphone. Qualcomm had even set up the prototype with the four Android buttons sitting below the display. Finally, there was a 5.7 inch display with a 1024 x 768 resolution destined for e-readers.

KitGuru says: We can't wait to see how these displays turn out in shipping devices – as to when that will happen we don't know.
