A Death Stranding film is in the works

One of Hideo Kojima’s goals with the creation of Kojima Productions was to eventually expand beyond gaming and into other mediums such as films and TV. It seems Kojima’s wish has been granted, as a Death Stranding film has officially been announced.

As reported by Deadline, Kojima Productions is partnering with Hammerstone Studios (known for Bill & Ted Face the Music, Kung Fury, Barbarian and more) to bring the unique world of Death Stranding to the silver screen.

It is currently unknown who is helming writing and directing duties, though it has been confirmed that Kojima himself will at least serve as producer for the film. Unsurprisingly, the plot is currently being kept secret, however we do know that the film will reportedly “introduce new elements and characters within the Death Stranding universe.”

Discussing the announcement of the film, Kojima said “I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios. This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing DEATH STRANDING to the big screen.”

Death Stranding is not a short game, with the epilogue alone being as long as an entire film. With even more characters and elements being included, it will be interesting to see how the game’s complex themes are translated into film. Furthermore, with the game using the likeness and performance of real-world actors, hopefully the likes of Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro and Margaret Qualley are all attached to reprise their roles. We will have to wait and see.
