Dragon Age: Dreadwolf has reached a major development milestone

EA has been attempting to be more open about its in-development projects. While BioWare hasn't been as open about Dragon Age 4 as EA Motive has been about Dead Space Remake, we've still had a good number of development updates. This week, BioWare gave us the latest news on the next Dragon Age, which just hit a new developmental milestone.

As of this month, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf has reached the alpha phase and is now playable from start to finish. With all the building blocks now in place, the developers can shift focus to iterating on gameplay features and dialling the visuals up. Once that is done, the game should finally be ready to show off properly for the first time.

“Up to this point, we’ve been working hard on the various parts of the game, but it’s not until the Alpha milestone that a game all comes together. Now, for the first time, we can experience the entire game, from the opening scenes of the first mission to the very end. We can see, hear, feel, and play everything as a cohesive experience”, BioWare wrote. “Of course, the game is not finished by any means, but Alpha is one of the most important game development milestones for a number of reasons. First and foremost, we can now turn our sights toward bringing the visual fidelity to its final form and iterating on gameplay features.”

Now that BioWare has reached this point, it will be seeking feedback from a small group and begin the process of finalising everything and making any changes that need to be made along the way. After that, it'll be a long process of testing and bug fixing to get the game ready for release.

Assuming the next phase of development goes well, we should get our first real look at Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in 2023. Previous rumours suggested BioWare was targeting a late 2023 release date too, but the game could easily slip into 2024, as game development timelines often shift.

KitGuru Says: BioWare had a rough few years with Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem. Now, Dragon Age has to truly deliver something that will keep longtime fans onside, while also bringing in a new audience. Hopefully, the team can achieve exactly that. Are you looking forward to the next Dragon Age?
