Yooka-Laylee remaster announced for current-gen consoles and ‘Nintendo’

The Yooka-Laylee duology are a series of throwback platformers, harkening to the days of the Nintendo 64 and PSOne mascot games. Originally released for the 8th-generation of consoles, the team at Playtonic have announced PS5, Series X|S, and PC remasters of the first entry – and is also coming to “Nintendo.”

Making the announcement via a press release, the team at Playtonic officially announced the upcoming remaster of 2017’s 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee, saying “Yooka-Replaylee is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo platforms! Experience the definitive version of Yooka and Laylee's very first adventure on a platform of your choice when the game launches on… wait, too soon for that.”

Some of the listed updates/enhancements coming with the remaster include:

  • Art and animations overhaul
  • Improvements to existing in-game challenges and many entirely new challenges
  • New collectible currency
  • A brand-new world map and challenges tracker
  • New, game-changing tonics
  • A new tweaked move set
  • Orchestral arrangement of the original soundtrack

While the remaster was first unveiled back in Summer, the most notable detail with this recent press release is the fact that the game is said to be coming to “Nintendo platforms” – indicating that this might be one of the first games to be confirmed for the upcoming Switch 2.

While some of the enhancements with the remaster could be backported, it would be odd for Playtonic to release a remaster of Yooka-Laylee on the original Switch – given the fact that the 2017 version is already available.

Yooka-Laylee was a solid 3D platformer when it was originally released, but could have benefited from a bit more time in the oven. As such, the remaster holds a great deal of potential, and will hopefully bring a renewed sense of interest in the Yooka-Laylee series.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
