Nintendo confirms security breach

We've seen a number of video game companies targeted by ransomware over the years. In more recent times, companies like CD Projekt Red, Insomniac and Capcom have had to deal with major breaches. Now, it appears that Nintendo has been hit recently. 

A group known as ShadowBytes claimed to have hacked Nintendo systems, stealing data that includes employee information, emails, bank statements and more. The breach took place through a third-party employee feedback portal that Nintendo had been using. The group has just under 1GB of data, which it is threatening to leak if a $2 million ransom is not paid.

Nintendo of America has already commented on the breach, saying it is “aware” of the issue, but adding that the data the hackers have is outdated. Nintendo was also firm in its stance that none of its own systems had been breached, which vastly limits the scope of the data the hackers could have stolen.

Like most major companies, we expect that Nintendo will not pay the ransom demand and will instead cooperate with law enforcement as criminal investigations get underway.

KitGuru Says: As this breach seemed to squarely target private employee data, I doubt we'll get any more public updates from Nintendo on this.
