Crash Bandicoot and Spyro studio ‘Toys for Bob’ going independent

Toys for Bob were one of Activision's hidden-gem studios, having done fantastic work on the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot remakes, before launching new games like Crash Bandicoot 4 and Crash Team Rumble. Now, following Microsoft's acquisition of Activision, as well as a round of layoffs, Toys for Bob is going independent.

In an announcement today, the Toys for Bob studio confirmed that it is breaking up with Activision to go independent. However, this does not necessarily mean a break-up with Microsoft, as the studio is also in talks to partner with Microsoft on future projects.

“With the same enthusiasm and passion, we believe that now is the time to take the studio and our future games to the next level. This opportunity allows us to return to our roots of being a small and nimble studio”, the studio said in a blog post. “To make this news even more exciting, we’re exploring a possible partnership between our new studio and Microsoft. And while we’re in the early days of developing our next new game and a ways away from making any announcements, our team is excited to develop new stories, new characters, and new gameplay experiences.”

Apparently, both Activision and Microsoft were supportive of this move. Presumably, the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro IP will be staying under Activision's control, but if this new independent version of Toys for Bob is partnering with Microsoft on a new game, then there is a chance they could continue working on those franchises.

For now, Toys for Bob's future plans are unconfirmed. They are working on a new game, but exactly what this game will be still remains to be seen, and it might stay that way for quite some time.
