Paragon is shutting down again less than two years after revival

Epic Games shut down its big MOBA project, Paragon, back in 2018 and opened up the game's assets to the community. A few years later, Netmarble relaunched the game as Paragon: The Overprime and now, the game is shutting down once again.

Paragon first launched in 2016 as an early access title but Epic Games dropped the project in 2018 due to the game failing to compete with other major MOBAs like Smite, League of Legends and Dota 2. The game returned in December 2022 with a new development studio at the helm but once again, the game has not gained enough traction and will shut down again.

In an official announcement this week, Netmarble said: “Since Early Access, Paragon: The Overprime has been a work in progress, as we've continued to explore, iterate, and think about different ways to meet our Warriors' expectations”. The company added that “after careful consideration” they have concluded that they will “not be able to provide a stable and satisfying service moving forward”.

Paragon will now shut down all over again, with the end of service scheduled for the 22nd of April 2024 and in-game purchases are now disabled. Netmarble concludes its announcement by saying: “We are deeply sorry for the unexpected and unfortunate termination of the service. We deeply cherish the encouragement and support you have given us until now despite our shortcomings”.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
