How does Thread Director manage Intel Meteor Lake?

KitGuru recently went on tour with Intel to Malaysia where we learned about the process of transforming a silicon wafer of dies into the CPU that powers your laptop. We were also briefed about Intel Meteor Lake and took the opportunity to interview Intel Fellow Rajshree Chabukswar about the inner workings of Thread Director.

During our interview with Rajshree Chabukswar we cracked a joke that she ought to be titled ‘Director of Thread Director'. The resulting silence sucked the life from the room and we resolved to cut that moment from our video. Happily the rest of the conversation was all good.

We are familiar with the way Thread Director handles the P-Cores and E-Cores in 12th Gen Alder Lake and 13th Gen Raptor Lake but 14th Gen Meteor Lake adds another twist with the addition of two Low Power E-cores in the System on Chip.

This means Windows 11 has to figure out how to schedule tasks for three types of CPU cores that are located on two separate pieces of silicon, which are the Compute and SoC tiles. This takes us to the heart of Intel's new disaggregated design and Rajshree explains how this complicated task is handled by Thread Director.
