A Nier: Automata sequel is on the way

It has been six years since Nier: Automata launched. The game was hailed as a feat of creative genius from director, Yoko Taro, and went on to spawn an anime series, a stage play and a successful line of merch, including figurines. Despite the game's high praise, we have yet to hear about a sequel, but that should be changing soon.

In an interview with Japanese site, 4Gamer, Nier producer, Yosuke Saito, confirmed that Yoko Taro is still working on the series. In fact, Saito and Taro are now working on a “separate” Nier project and it will be revealed sometime next year. Given the success of Nier Automata, it is safe to assume that a sequel reveal would be saved for one of the bigger gaming events of the year, like E3, or perhaps the Tokyo Game Show.

Unfortunately, that's all the information we have for now but it should be welcomed news for fans of the Nier games. The franchise started off as a nicher one, with the first game achieving a smaller level of success. However, Nier: Automata thoroughly changed things, with the sequel becoming played and recognised around the world, with iconic new characters and twists and turns that reveal themselves over the course of multiple campaign playthroughs. To get the full experience, you really need to finish the game five times, a feat that shouldn't be too much of a chore, thanks to PlatinumGames' excellent and fluid combat system.

Whether the new game will be a direct continuation of Nier: Automata, or will focus on an all-new set of characters and settings, remains to be seen.

KitGuru Says: Nier: Automata was a huge hit, so it is surprising that we've not really heard much about a sequel. Fortunately, the series has not been forgotten and it looks like we can expect big news in 2024.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
