Fortnite breaks new record with over 6 million concurrent players

6 years ago, Fortnite Battle Royale launched to a surprising level of success, elevating Epic Games beyond their primary status as an engine developer and shifting the industry’s focus to live-service titles. The launch of Chapter 4 Season 5 (aka Fortnite OG) brings back the original map – alongside more than 6 million concurrent players.

In going to the Fortnite tracking site ‘fortnite.gg’ it can be seen that over the past weekend, many players flocked back to the free-to-play battle royale title to give the latest Season a try – which brings back the original Fortnite map from 6 years ago alongside many other nostalgic inclusions.

With 6,172,463 total concurrent players, Fortnite has seen a massive spike in traffic, with last month’s concurrent player count peaking at ‘just’ 2.3 million. For comparison, the most played game of all time on Steam according to its peak CCU is PUBG: Battlegrounds which saw 3,236,027 players back in January 2018.

Of course, Fortnite’s figures include players from across all devices including PC, consoles and mobile, so the comparison is not quite 1:1, but still, it showcases just how popular the latest Season appears to be.

It’ll be interesting to see whether more live-service games will attempt to bring players back with similar nostalgia tactics – and whether it will likewise work in their favour.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
