“We have no goal of somehow using Call of Duty to get you to buy an Xbox” claims Phil Spencer

After months of legal battles, Microsoft has finally officially acquired Activision Blizzard, giving the Xbox console manufacturer control over one of the biggest franchises in gaming: Call of Duty. According to the head of Xbox Phil Spencer, the FPS juggernaut will feature 100% parity on content for Call of Duty on all platforms, claiming that “We have no goal of somehow using Call of Duty to get you to buy an Xbox console.”

Phil Spencer recently made an appearance on the official Xbox Podcast, in which he discussed the finalisation of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $68.7 Billion. A great deal of the legalese surrounding the acquisition pertained to Call of Duty and how its new ownership could affect the likes of Sony. According to Spencer:

“Players on PlayStation – and in the future on Nintendo – I want you to feel 100% a part of the community. I don’t want you to feel like there’s content you’re missing out, there’s skins you’re missing out, there’s timing that you’re missing out on. That’s not the goal.”

He continued, “The goal is 100% parity across all platforms, as much as we can for launching content. I say as much as we can on parity cuz clearly some platforms have resolution and frame rate differences just based on [performance], but there’s nothing else – like we have no goal of somehow trying to use Call of Duty to get you to buy an Xbox console.”

Spencer concluded by saying: “I want the Call of Duty nation to feel supported across all platforms. We’ve been on the other side of some of these skins and times – even this beta [for MWIII] it wasn't on Xbox the first week. I just…I don’t think that helps the community, I don’t think that helps the game and so it’s the focus that if you’re a PlayStation player, Nintendo Player, PC player or an Xbox console player I want you to feel like 100% part of the Call of Duty nation.”

While a welcome statement, it will be interesting to see how future Call of Duty titles operate when it comes to including some of the PS5’s more unique features such as the DualSense’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. Currently COD games support these console exclusive features. Hopefully they continue to do so moving forward.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
