EVO 2023 registration breaks new record

EVO is one of the biggest competitive gaming tournaments in the industry, dating all the way back to 1996 and offering an arena where the biggest and best fighting game champions can clash. Almost 30 years on from its inception and the event is bigger than ever, with registration for the 2023 tournament already breaking records.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official EVO account revealed that “Street Fighter 6 at #Evo2023 has officially broken a franchise and All-Time Evo record for competitors” two weeks ahead of registration’s closure – meaning when all is said and done total players are likely to eclipse the current record further.

There are a number of reasons as to why this year’s EVO is especially exciting. Of course, EVO 2023 marks the first time that the newly released Street Fighter VI will be included in the competition, replacing the now 7 year-old SFV.

Another major factor in its popularity is the fact that this year’s EVO prize pool for every single game has been raised to at least $25,000 – with the separate Capcom Pro Tour seeing a whopping $2 million pool. Prior to this, the biggest EVO prize pool totalled a relatively modest $100,000 for Multiversus in 2022.

Seeing such a massive increase in the potential winnings would have undoubtedly enticed many more players to give this year’s competition (and other competitions in general) a go. EVO 2023 looks set to be one of the most exciting yet when it takes place later this Summer on the 4th of August.
