Nintendo president explains Switch 2 price hike

Last week, Nintendo confirmed that it would be raising Switch 2 console prices in the US, putting the price up by $50. Now in an earnings call this week, Nintendo President, Shuntaro Furukawa has apologised for the “considerable inconvenience” the price increase will cause.

Nintendo Patent Watch translated the call, in which Furukawa confirms that the Switch 2 price increase presents a new “barrier” to purchase. However, he also believes that the slate of games Nintendo has coming up will keep the console in demand.

Here is the full quote:

“We will prepare a robust software lineup to enhance the Switch 2 ownership value. We will work diligently to overcome this barrier. We sincerely apologize to our customers for the considerable inconvenience and trouble this will cause. While we wanted to prioritize a wide adoption, it was challenging to bear the rising costs over a long period.”

At this point, the Switch 2 has had a very successful first-year on the market, but Nintendo's first-party studios have barely begun cooking. From this year onwards, we should start to see an influx of new exclusive games. Currently, Nintendo expects to sell over 16M Switch 2 consoles during its second year on the market, although this is described as a high estimate.
