Embracer strikes deal with WB for new Lord of the Rings movies

Last year, Embracer Group acquired Middle-Earth Enterprises and along with it, the rights to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and other works. With the rights changing hands, many have wondered what this means for the future of LOTR in film. As it turns out, not much will be changing, as Embracer has now entered an agreement with Warner Bros. 

During a financial call this week, WB CEO, David Zaslav not only announced Mortal Kombat 12, but also confirmed that the company has struck a licensing deal with Embracer to be allowed to make “multiple Lord of the Rings movies”. Just like Peter Jackson's original trilogy, these new LOTR films will be produced with New Line Cinema.

This news swiftly follows on from Embracer's own announcement that there are at least five Lord of the Rings video game projects in the works. Some of these we already know about, like Daedelic Entertainment's upcoming Gollum game, while others remain shrouded in mystery.

Presumably, these deals won't have an impact on Amazon's own LOTR license, allowing the company to continue producing its Rings of Power TV show.
