Embracer has five Lord of the Rings games in development

Last year, Embracer Group made one of its biggest acquisitions yet after taking Middle-Earth Enterprises on board. The move gave Embracer the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, but few new projects have been announced. That's set to change soon, with the company today confirming that at least five LOTR games are in the works. 

In an earnings report this week, as covered by EmbracerInvestor, the company confirmed that five new games based on The Lord of the Rings IP are scheduled to be released by the 31st of March 2024. These particular games are all being developed by external partners, so there is a good chance some of these games were already in development prior to Embracer acquiring the IP.

As always, it is important to take this information with a pinch of salt. Publishers regularly state these plans while remaining entirely open to delays. With that in mind, I wouldn't expect to actually see five Lord of the Rings titles released in the next year.

Now that Embracer owns Middle-Earth Enterprises, it has the IP rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and can choose to take up internal development efforts or to license out the IP to external studios. We are likely to see Embracer use a mix of both.

KitGuru Says: One of these games seems to be Gollum, but the other four are a mystery. All I can do is cross my fingers and hope for a return to Battle for Middle Earth.
