Ethereum Merge set for September, will make GPU crypto mining obsolete

Crypto-mining, and more specifically, Ethereum mining, has been the source of plenty of controversy in recent years, in part due to the colossal amount of energy mining farms use up, and in part due to the fact that the mining craze drove up the prices of graphics cards to astronomical levels. In September, The Ethereum Foundation will finally address both of these things.

For years new, The Ethereum Foundation has been working towards moving from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake to validate transactions on the blockchain. However, ‘the merge' has been delayed several times already, so miners held onto their GPUs for a bit longer. On the 6th of September the merge will finally take place, and will complete sometime between September 10th and September 20th.

Once the change has occurred, graphics cards will no longer be necessary for mining Ethereum. In addition, as pointed out by The Verge, proof-of-stake uses 99.95 percent less energy compared to the previous method.

In the lead-up, The Ethereum Foundation is also expanding its bug bounty program to sniff out any issues that need addressing. Bugs considered ‘critical' carry a bounty of $1 million USD.
