Square Enix issues security warning following influx of suspicious Final Fantasy 14 logins

It looks like Final Fantasy 14 players should check their accounts and set up 2FA, as Square Enix has confirmed it is experiencing “an attack by a third party”. The publisher is currently investigating the issue and may issue password resets.

In a community post, Square Enix said that a third party is attempting to access the Square Enix Account Management System using a combination of email addresses and passwords obtained from other online services. It would seem someone has bought a database of passwords and email addresses, likely obtained through phishing scams unrelated to the game.

As some people use the same email and password combination across multiple sites and services, there is concern that some could have their accounts stolen or jeopardised in other ways. In an effort to mitigate the attack, Square Enix is currently restricting accounts that show suspicious activity, such as a log-in from an unrecognised device. Square Enix is then sending out password reset emails to these users.

Final Fantasy 14 does have its own form of 2FA, through the use of One-Time Passwords, which is a secondary, temporary password you can use to authenticate your login and add extra security to your account.

KitGuru Says: Setting up 2FA for video games can be a nuisance but the last thing anyone wants is to lose their account, characters and progress. With that in mind, make sure to keep all your accounts secure, especially nowadays when phishing scams and data leaks are more common.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
