Activision shows off 7 minutes of Call of Duty MW2 gameplay

Summer Game Fest has officially kicked off with a showcase hosted by none other than Geoff Keighley. Being one of the biggest gaming events of the year, Call of Duty had to make an appearance – and appear it did with a substantive seven minute long gameplay demo for the upcoming Modern Warfare 2.

Call of Duty campaigns are neither the longest nor the deepest, however what they do offer is a fun and bombastic several hour long blockbuster-like experience. The demo shown off for Summer Game Fest seems to tick all these boxes.

Being a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare, MW2 will be the first entry in this sub-series to be developed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Of course, the game is still coming to last-gen consoles, but PS5 and Xbox Series X players will now be able to see Captain Price’s glorious beard in even higher definition.

This isn’t the first game to utilise COD’s updated engine on new-gen systems however, as last year’s Call of Duty: Vanguard had also adopted it. That being said, Vanguard was set in WW2 and so it will be interesting to see how Modern Warfare 2’s more contemporary aesthetic is translated for the new consoles.

From what has been shown off, the game looks and sounds great. Of course, being a Summer Game Fest demo, the gameplay was highly scripted and featured many in-engine cutscene moments, Every COD campaign has a few levels like that, but typically they also feature some which break the mould. Hopefully Modern Warfare 2 has more of the latter.

One final thing to note is that the gameplay shown off utilised an atypical cinematic aspect ratio. While this is nothing new for cutscenes, gameplay is typically kept at 16:9. There are a few exceptions to this rule, and so it will be interesting to see whether this choice aspect-ratio will exist in the final release, or if it was just for the showcase. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is launching on the 28th of October.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
