Epic Games Store reaffirms commitment to free weekly games

The Epic Games Store was a bit late to the party when it came to offering their own PC storefront and platform – coming 15 years after the launch of Steam. That said, in order to stay competitive the store has been offering free games on a weekly basis since 2019. During Unreal Fest 2023, Epic Games reaffirmed their commitment to this program “through 2023 and beyond.”

Epic Games’ Unreal Fest 2023 has now come and gone, with the platform holder announcing a bunch of improvements set to arrive to the Epic Games Store over the coming years, ranging from the activity feed to a ‘For You’ page and more.

In a welcome move, Epic revealed that they will continue to offer free games to all EGS users on a weekly basis saying (as transcribed by SteamDeals and ResetEra user ‘nsilvias’):

“Our commitment to the store is unwavering. So some of the things I want to call out to make sure that everyone knows that we're dedicated to this. Like first, the free games program's gonna continue through 2023 and beyond. I'm not ready to share additional details of what next year looks like, but we will be doing something.”

As mentioned, Epic’ free game program began in 2019 and while it was initially slated to run until the end of year, the platform holder later extended the program’s life – having now done so once again.

In the years since its launch, we have seen hundreds of games given away for free, ranging from the smallest indies to massive AAA games such as Death Stranding; Dying Light; Wolfenstein: The New Order; Star Wars: Squadrons; Shadow of the Tomb Raider; and Borderlands 3 – to name just a few.

While not every week is a winner, it is exciting to see Epic continue with its free games program – helping to differentiate itself from other PC store fronts. This week’s free games will be The Evil Within and Eternal Threads, so look forward to that.
