CD Projekt Red is updating The Witcher and The Witcher 2 to support Apple Silicon

While Valve might be ditching macOS support for its new releases like Counter-Strike 2, plenty of other developers are actually increasing their support for the system. CD Projekt Red is amongst that group, as the company is going back to The Witcher 1 and The Witcher 2 to support newer model Mac computers.

In an announcement today, CD Projekt Red announced that it is updating both The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings to support macOS Ventura, as well as Apple Silicon processors like the M1 and M2.

This updated macOS support does come at a price though. After the update, the minimum requirements for both games will change, requiring macOS 11.0 or newer, ditching support for older OS X 10 versions. If you happen to be a Mac user using an older Mac without Apple Silicon, you will want to disable automatic updates for both games if you own them on Steam. GOG is the only platform where rolling back to an earlier version will be available.

Apple recently unveiled games like No Man's Sky, Death Stranding and Resident Evil Village for iPhones, iPads and Macs and the company is looking to get more publishers developing for Apple Silicon-powered systems. Apple has also released a porting kit, available to developers interested in bringing their games over to Apple's platforms.

KitGuru Says: Chances are, this will impact very, very few people. As we know from Steam's monthly surveys, macOS users account for less than 1% of the Steam user base, which is also the reason Valve opted not to support the OS with Counter-Strike 2. However, if Apple does manage to turn the Mac into a viable gaming platform with its most recent push, then we should see support slowly increase over time.
