Sonic goes open world in new trailer for Sonic Frontiers

We've known for a while now that SEGA is working on a new 3D Sonic game, seemingly looking to take the series in an open-world direction. Last night during The Game Awards, not only did we get a trailer for the Sonic movie sequel, but we also got a new reveal for Sonic Frontiers, the next major game in the franchise.

Sonic Frontier aims to be the first “open-zone” Sonic game, indicating that we'll be running around at the speed of sound in large open-world environments.

The trailer is cinematic, so we still have much to learn when it comes to gameplay, mechanics, story and other key elements. All the footage we do get does seem to be in-engine though and the map itself does seem to take inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Currently, Sonic Frontiers is scheduled to release in late 2022, for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, PS4, PS5 and the Nintendo Switch.

KitGuru Says: As much as I love the Sonic series, I do wonder how well Sonic can translate to an open-world format. We should have be able to answer that question by this time next year though, assuming development remains on track.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
