Take-Two acquires studio behind OlliOlli series

While skateboarding was all the rage back in the late 90s and early 2000s, the sport saw its relevance shrink both in the real world and video game space. One of the few companies continuing to create fun and interesting skateboarding games is Roll7 with their OlliOlli franchise. It has now been announced that Private Division – one of Take-Two’s publishing labels – has acquired Roll7.

Making the announcement in a press release, Take-Two Interactive said “Private Division, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), today announced that they have acquired video game developer Roll7. Based in London, the BAFTA award-winning studio is currently developing OlliOlli World to be published by Private Division and planned for launch this winter during Take-Two’s fiscal fourth quarter ending March 31, 2022.”

While terms of the deal were not disclosed, Michael Worosz – the Executive Vice President and Head of Private Division – said “We’re thrilled to welcome Roll7 to the Private Division family. As a team passionate about action sports ourselves, seeing how Roll7 combines the thrill of competition with the zen of achieving flow-state in a video game is remarkable, and we can’t wait to show the world this phenomenon with our release of OlliOlli World this winter.”

As mentioned, OlliOlli World is the newest game from Roll7 and is the third entry in the OlliOlli series. Both OlliOlli 1 and 2 were received well by both critics and fans, and so all eyes are set on OlliOlli World to complete the trilogy on a high note.

Speaking on the acquisition, Roll7’s CEO Simon Bennett said “Private Division has empowered our amazing team to raise the bar on our creativity and scope for OlliOlli World. Joining the label puts us in a great position to continue to grow and to set our sights on achieving our ambition to become a pre-eminent global videogames developer.”

Publishers appear to be scooping up indie studios left right and centre. Hopefully all these acquisitions are ultimately for the betterment and security of these indie studios.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
