Quake Champions update removes all microtransactions and F2P elements

Quake Champions first launched way back in 2017, before going free-to-play in 2018. Now, eight years on, Quake Champions is no longer a free-to-play game.

A recent update to Quake Champions has removed its free-to-play status. Moving forward, new players who have never added the game to their account will need to pay £8.99 first. That means anyone who has already played the game on PC or console won't have to now suddenly pay to continue playing.

It may seem like an odd move at first, but Update 1.31 did more than just add a price tag to the game's store page. All microtransactions and in-app purchases have now been removed, and the game has had a large balance patch and a refresh of item locations on different maps.

Aside from a long list of QoL and bug fixes, this update has also implemented two other important things. The game's servers have now been consolidated into fewer datacenters in order to push more players together and improve matchmaking times. On top of that, the Play Now UI now also has a queue size stat for each playlist.

KitGuru Says: Quake Champions is underrated in my opinion, and I feel similarly about the Doom 2016 multiplayer. Are you considering returning to the game now that all microtransactions have been removed?
