Sonic Frontiers hits new milestone with 5 million copies sold

There was once a time when we would see new Sonic the Hedgehog games on nearly an annual basis. While some of these titles proved to be critical and commercial successes, fans were unfortunately treated to an equal number of rushed and disappointing releases. With the arrival of Sonic Frontiers back in 2022 however, the team at SEGA appeared to be putting more time and care into each release – a strategy which seems to be paying off.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the official Sonic the Hedgehog page wrote: “We've Found Our Flame – and it's you! Thank you for helping Sonic Frontiers surpass 5 MILLION copies sold! To celebrate, the iconic Sonic Adventure 2 Shoes are now available to all players. Enjoy!”

While the classic SA2 shoes were already available in-game, access was previously limited to those who signed up for SEGA’s newsletter back during the game’s promotional period prior to launch. Though a small gesture, it is nice to see all other owners now being given the cosmetic.

Sonic Frontiers SEGA

While SEGA is rather temperamental when it comes to sharing sales data for its Sonic games, Frontiers appears to be one of the most successful in years, with fan favourites such as Sonic Unleashed, Colours and Mania reportedly landing in the 1-2 million range.

Additionally, Sonic Frontiers was made available as part of PlayStation Plus for a time, meaning the total number of players has likely far exceeded the 5 million sales figure.

Sonic Frontiers was far from perfect. That said, the game did offer a solid foundation with which SEGA could build upon for future titles. It will be interesting to see what’s in store for the next mainline Sonic the Hedgehog game.
