Microsoft commits to at least 3 years of Android updates for Surface Duo

The Surface Duo, Microsoft's first Android-powered smartphone, is coming out in just over one month. The dual-display, folding device is set to be a multi-taskers dream, but how long can buyers expect updates to the latest version of Android for?

This is something that differs between manufacturers. Some devices have only received one major Android update, others have been updated for much longer periods of time. In Microsoft's case, the company is committing to at least three years of OS and security updates for the Surface Duo.

This includes Google's latest major Android revisions, updates to Microsoft's own Android launcher to take advantage of, or introduce new features, and security updates. That last one is particularly important, as a number of vulnerabilities tend to be discovered in Android devices each year.

As reported by The Verge, this is similar to a recent commitment from Samsung, with Samsung also agreeing to at least three generations of Android updates for the Galaxy S10 and newer devices.

KitGuru Says: Three years is a solid period of time for guaranteed updates. Most people will upgrade after two years anyway and adding on that extra year of support should cover the vast majority of buyers. How long do you think smartphone makers should commit to Android updates for? Is three years enough, or should it be extended to five years or perhaps even more?

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
