Metal Gear series surpasses 60 million copies sold

After taking a lengthy break from the video games industry following Hideo Kojima’s departure from publisher Konami, the Metal Gear series is finally once again returning to the limelight with current-gen ports of the classic MGS games alongside an in-development remake of the iconic Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Ahead of these releases, Konami has offered updated sales figures for many of its franchises, revealing that the Metal Gear series has sold over 60 million copies.

As discovered by ResetEra user ‘Bishop89’ Konami Group Corporation recently released their latest Digital Entertainment Business report focused on the publisher’s future plans for gaming – including the utilisation of “new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI,) fifth and sixth generation mobile communications (5G/6G,) virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR,) non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the metaverse.”

Much more excitingly, the publisher offered updated sales figures for many of its franchises, revealing that the much-loved Metal Gear series has sold over 60 million copies.

While the franchise has existed for more than 35 years, there have been a surprisingly small number of releases during this time, with there only being 6 mainline MGS titles released in this period.

As mentioned, there has not been a new mainline game in the series since all the way back in 2015 with MGS V: The Phantom Pain – with the only other MGS title released since then being the critically panned Metal Gear Survive spin-off (released in 2018).

With The Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 set to launch in October of this year, and a remake of MGS 3: Snake Eater confirmed to be in development, it will be interesting to see how the franchise performs moving forward without Kojima’s involvement. We will have to wait and see.

It tends to take a lot for gamers to 'forgive' a studio after messing up a launch, for instance CD Projekt Red had to spend three additional years developing Cyberpunk 2077 before many were willing to give the game another shot. In the case of Helldivers 2, despite the game having some rough server issues at launch, the game turned out to be so good that many players simply waited things out, without leaving a trail of negative reviews. Now, a case of incredibly poor communication and a poorly thought-out plan from the game's publisher, Sony, has put Helldivers 2 in jeopardy, with the game being removed from over 170 countries.
