Final Fantasy 9 Remake a no show at 25th anniversary stream

For years now, a Final Fantasy 9 remake has been rumoured. When Square Enix announced plans for a special 25th anniversary event for the game, an announcement became widely anticipated. However, the stream came and went this week with absolutely no mention of a new Final Fantasy 9 game.

The Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary stream included new merch, some fancy new character art, but no mention of a new game. Leaker NatetheHate, who has spoken about the Final Fantasy 9 Remake in the past, claims to have heard that the game was ‘in trouble' recently. However, other outlets like VGC report that the game is still in development.

Final Fantasy 9 first released for the PS1 in 2000, before re-releasing in 2010 for more modern platforms of the time, like the PSP and PS3. The game is also available today on newer consoles, mobile devices and PC.

We first learned of plans for a Final Fantasy 9 remake in 2021, when a GeForce Now database leak revealed project names and working titles for hundreds of unannounced games. Many of the games first spotted in this leak were later confirmed, including Square Enix titles like Chrono Cross Remastered, Kingdom Hearts 4 and the PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

If the remake is still in development, then we should get some kind of nod towards it from Square Enix at some stage this year. However, the company has been reluctant to confirm it so far, although producers like Naoki Yoshida have commented on the idea in interviews before.

KitGuru Says: The stream last night will have been disappointing to anyone who has been following the remake leaks in recent years. I do wonder if the lower-than-expected sales for Final Fantasy Rebirth could have given Square Enix cold feet. In all likelihood, Final Fantasy 9 Remake would have been split up into multiple parts too.
