Death Stranding is getting an animated movie in addition to A24’s live-action film

Last night during Kojima Productions' Beyond the Strand event, we received a bunch of announcements. It turns out that there are actually TWO films in the works based on the Death Stranding IP. The live action film, which was announced previously, is being developed by legendary film studio A24. On top of that, Kojima also has a Death Stranding animated film on the way.

Death Stranding: Mosquito is the name for the new animated film. It is being made in collaboration with Line Mileage and ABC Animation, making this yet another major Hollywood co-production.

In keeping with Kojima’s signature approach, the teaser doesn't give away much but evokes the philosophical themes behind Death Stranding. Based on the teaser, the film will stay true to the core themes of the game, with a focus on connection and isolation.

The film will be directing by ABC Animation’s Hiroshi Miyamoto and written by Aaron Guzikowski (Raised by Wolves, Prisoners). There is no release date yet and no casting decisions have been announced either, so we could be waiting a couple of years to get a more in-depth look.

KitGuru Says: Kojima is moving on from Death Stranding games to focus on other projects. However, the IP will live on through other forms of media, and while it may not be directed by Kojima himself, I would be shocked if they weren't already making plans for a third game.
