Fans discover empty discs as physical copies of DOOM: The Dark Ages ship out

DOOM: The Dark Ages doesn't release until later this week, but fans have already begun receiving physical copies of the game. Unfortunately, those who purchased the game on disc have swiftly discovered that there is almost no data on it. 

The physical version of DOOM: The Dark Ages on PS5 and Xbox only includes 85MB of data on the disc, forcing buyers to download the entire 80GB game before playing. This means that users will need a stable internet connection to complete the download, but once that is done, the game is playable offline.

This is not an uncommon practise. Many games over the years have shipped physical discs that merely contain a key to download the full game. However, it is increasingly frowned upon amongst those that value game preservation. It is also viewed as an environmentally unfriendly waste of materials.

Prior to DOOM, Bethesda published Indiana Jones and the Great Circle in December. That game also shipped with incomplete files on the disc. However, in that situation, the disc did contain 20GB of game data, allowing buyers to avoid having to download the entire 120GB game.
