Synology DiskStation DS1511+ Review

Without question the Synology DS1511+ is the fastest NAS we have tested to date. Performance via single link is class leading outperforming the DS1010+, and when correctly configured into 802.3ad dynamic link aggregation mode, throughput enters into a completely new performance zone.

Within a well configured small to medium sized business, this product is going to redefine networking capabilities, offering not only class leading performance, but a wide range of settings to the IT department. With 512 concurrent connections and the ability to expand storage to 45 Terrabytes (with two optional DX510's) it may very well find a home in larger corporations who don't need the ultimate configuration demands of a CISCO custom built unit (often with a five figure price tag).

The DS1511+ has literally blown us away, no matter the demands we placed on the system, it never failed to deliver. The DS1010+ was an astounding product, but this latest upgrade pushes Synology further away from their competitors. The latest Diskstation multitaking operating system is easily the best on the market, offering a low overhead, inituitive interface with settings to cover both home and business markets.

We have said it before, however we really do wish that Synology would opt for metal drive bays. They also need to add the ability to lock the drive bays with a security key system. This could be a potential issue for some business clients.

A system with such diversity and outright performance could be expected to cost in excess of £1,000, but amazingly Yoyotech are offering the DS1511+ for £645 including VAT, in the United Kingdom. Obviously you have to add the cost of the drives to the final price, but everything considered this is still a bargain.

KitGuru says: Ultimate performance, great build quality and the best software suite on the market. For a growing business, or enthusiast user with a high level of disposable budget, this should be a primary purchase.
