Larian to move on from Baldur’s Gate 3 after big modding update

Earlier this month, Larian Studios announced plans to bring official mod support to Baldur's Gate 3. The new modding kit is currently in testing, with an official release scheduled for September. Now, it appears that the mod support update will be the last major content update for the game as Larian begins to ramp up work on new projects.

Modding support on Baldur's Gate 3 for PC will be evaluated to guarantee service compatibility and general stability before approval, similarly to how CD Projekt Red recently handled the release of The Witcher 3's upgraded modding tools. On PC, mods can be installed from any source, but console users will be limited to mods approved for Larian's official launcher.

Speaking during an interview recently, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, confirmed that the modding update will likely be the last one for Baldur's Gate 3, handing the keys over to the community to make additions to the game:

“One of the big things for us, and the one that we’re really working towards now, is the ability for players to mod themselves, because then they will be able to make their own things. I think that will be the point where we’re going to say ‘ok, now it’s yours fully’.”

Larian has already confirmed that it has plans for two new games and has no plans to work with Wizards of the Coast on a new Baldur's Gate game.
